A charming lady who used to live in the north of England came to London to find both a country house and a London flat, but ended up with one very big, lovely house (almost a country house in fact), near enough to London to pop in whenever she likes. My job was to go on the journey of decorating the new house with her and make sure she enjoyed the process, which I think she did – she says she’s loved every moment of it.
With a grown-up family that is beginning to expand, I decided that this must be a family home and not be precious. I loved being able to incorporate the things my client had brought with her; I think it’s incredibly important to have things from the past in a home which the children recognise in the new home. We’ve kept the formal side of life at the front of the house, but when the young come to stay at weekends, their more informal needs can also be accommodated.
I had to do this house piecemeal while my client lived in it, which might have been difficult. But she has been thrilled by what has proved to be a happy journey.
